Ernest J. Aucone, Ph.D., ABPP-CN (he/his/him)
Board Certified Neuropsychologist
I am a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist with expertise across a variety of clinical populations and presenting concerns, from young adults with attentional and learning disorders to older adults concerned about age-associated cognitive decline and dementia. I approach my work from an evidence-based and holistic point of view, with the understanding that every client has a unique social, psychological, and biologic history that contributes to current cognitive and socioemotional strengths and weaknesses. From this approach I am able to offer clients individualized recommendations intended to maximize success in their chosen school, work, and social environments.
Dr. Aucone is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist with experience assessing adults with a variety of complex conditions, including psychiatric, developmental, neurological, and medical disorders. His primary areas of interest include adult ADHD and learning disorders, differential diagnosis of dementia, cognitive and neuropsychiatric functioning in persons with multiple sclerosis, and the social epidemiology of cognitive aging. In addition to his work at The Stixrud Group, he serves as the Director of Neuropsychology at the Washington, DC Veterans Administration Medical Center, and the coordinator of neuropsychology within the Veterans Health Administration’s (VHA) Multiple Sclerosis Centers of Excellence. In his role of Director of Neuropsychology, he trains and supervises neuropsychology practicum students, pre-doctoral neuropsychology interns, and postdoctoral fellows in clinical neuropsychology. He is actively involved in research and has a particular interest in secondary influences (e.g., sleep disturbance, comorbid vascular risk, socioeconomic status, quality of education) on cognitive functioning in multiple sclerosis and age-associated neurocognitive disorders.
Dr. Aucone was born and raised in Providence, RI. He did his graduate work in clinical psychology at Nova Southeastern University, his APA accredited internship at the Boston VA Healthcare System/Harvard Medical School, and his postdoctoral fellowship training in clinical neuropsychology at the University of Virginia.
