Everyone in the Greater Washington area is concerned about the escalating levels of stress and anxiety in children and adolescents. And for every child or teen who is crippled by anxiety or underperforming because of stress, there is another failing to thrive for lack of intrinsic motivation. In this talk, Dr. William Stixrud and Ned Johnson will explain a crucial link between the twin scourges of high stress and low motivation, namely a low sense of control or autonomy. They will present practical, eye-opening approaches for supporting the development of autonomy and raising healthy, successful children, approaches which they discuss in their new book, The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives (Viking Books).
