"Children dont play anymore." This is what a number of educators and child development experts are saying, as young children are increasingly spending time on academics, structured team sports and lessons, television, and video games rather than dramatic play with other children. This is worrisome, as humans (and other mammals) have always engaged in dramatic play with their peers. This presentation will describe the critical role played by sociodramatic play in early cognitive, social, and neurological development, as well as the possible implications of children not playing. We will then consider a number of ways in which parents and early childhood educators can promote dramatic play in the lives of young children.
